Touted as the world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lense digital camera, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 is the perfect camera for consumers looking for the creative option of interchangeable lenses but the versitility of a small, light camera. Using a new system called "The Four Thirds," Panasonic has found a way to eleminate the mirror system that weighs down other digital single lense reflex (DSLR) cameras. Consumers will not be trading in quality for ease of use, though. This lightweight (and colorful) little camera offers 12 megapixels, easy-to-use interchangeable lenses, and a quick autofocus that allows any photographer to capture even the fleetest moment. The Lumix also features a "live" viewfinder with a high resolution and clarity, allowing the user to shoot exactly what the camera sees and still view shooting information. This camera features tools that make an easy introduction into the world of single lense reflex cameras for photographers used to point and shoot cameras. Featuring intelligent auto focus, which will track a moving subject, face detect which will help to focus in on human subjects, and specific scenery shooting modes which adjust the camera's setting for each situation.

The specs for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 are:

Dimensions: 3.29'' x 4.88'' x 1.78''

Weight: 0.85 lbs

Battery Life: Up to 330 images using the LCD or up to 350 images using the viewfinder

Available Colors: Black, Red, or Blue

Megapixels: 12.1

Recording Media: SD Memory Card

Self Timer

Built in flash

Hot Shoe to add an external flash

Customizeable Color Modes

Intelligent Auto Focus

Image Stabilizer

Dust Reduction System

Accesories: camera strap, camera case, external flash, interchangeable lense, lense filter, USB cable

Lumix DMC G1 in Red

If a consumer is looking for the quality of a single lense reflex camera, but the convenience of a portable point and shoot, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 is the way to go. Its lightweight style, live viewfinder, and intelligent auto focus features definitely fit the bill for a consumer making the move from a point and shoot camera to something more.

All digital cameras rely on a color space definition to capture color. This definition, which is part of a processing algorithm, forces light values captured by the camera sensor into a defined color space. Essentially, the camera can only capture specific colors, not the entire spectrum of color. Generally, this is not significant because the human eye cannot really discern colors accurately. There are several color space definitions in use today. Each has its advantages and disadvantages:

RGB-Within the RGB color model are color spaces number, such as Apple RGB, sRGB and Adobe RGB(1998). Each RGB color space defines color through three distinct axes (R, G, B), but differ in its gamut and other characteristics. RGB can be considered as a triad of grayscale images (usually known as channels) representing the basic lights, Red, Green and Blue. By mixing these three channels of basic light creates many visible colors. The three colors combined generate white, unlike the CMYK color space, which generates black. For this reason, the RGB color space is called an additive color space.

sRGB-sRGB is currently the standard color space for cameras and computer monitors. This standard was created by Microsoft and HP in 1996 as a standard for computer monitors and software. The sRGB standard includes three important areas: colorimetric RGB definition, the equivalent gamma value of 2.2, and a set of well defined viewing conditions. This results in a color space that is equal among all devices, from the digital camera to the printer. The only problem is that standardization means much fewer colors are possible.

YUV-A television standard used in Europe that enables backward compatibility with black-and-white televisions. A variant called YIQ is used in North American television systems. In addition, all DVDs rely on the YUV/YIQ color space. The engineers who invented the YUV color space needed a good way to allow color television broadcasts matched with black and white televisions. The color signal they created with also required to conserve bandwidth since three channels of RGB color data would not fit into the constricted broadcast signal space. The YUV color space uses RGB information, but it creates a black-and white image (luminance) from the full color image and then subtracts the three primary colors, resulting in two additional signals to describe color. Combining the three signals back together results in a full color image. Note that in either case, if the chrominance (color information) is ignored, the result is a black-and-white picture.

CMYK-Color printers and large offset printers rely on the CMYK color space. This color space matches the color pigments cyan, magenta, and yellow. The color black (the K in CMYK) is included, but not required. The colors C, M, and Y absorb colors on paper, creating black. This differs from the RGB color space, which reflects white when the colors R, G, and B are combined. For this reason, the CMY color space is called a "subtractive model." The black (K) component is added so that true black can be printed on paper (versus a contrived black from the three colors). As with the RGB color space, every color is represented by three values: C, M, and Y. These values are assumed to be in the 0-255 range.

CiéLAB-LAB color mode splits color into three values:

L describes relative lightness

A represents relative redness-greenness

B represents relative yellowness-blueness

Adobe Photoshop software uses LAB color as its native color space because LAB color can be converted to another color space without doing damage to the colors' intensities or hues. Photoshop is just as talented at working with images in the other color spaces, of course. The RGB color space is actually related closely to LAB color. The CiéLAB model was adopted worldwide as the master color space definition in 1991.

The color models described here are the most common color spaces. Digital cameras rely on the RGB color space, which has a few issues. One is that the RGB color space is device-dependent. In other words, when the camera captures an image, it may not appear the same on the monitor (another RGB device). This, of course, could cause problems for serious color photographers.

As you use Photoshop and digital photography more often, you will need to ensure that you have the most accurate color setup by tweaking Color Settings. Most digital cameras rely on sRGB. Only the higher-end cameras provide the richer Adobe RGB color space. Always try to use Adobe RGB if your camera can capture in that color space. These color spaces matter significantly when printing with a high-end inkjet printer.

The Nikon D3X is the newest of Nikon's "extreme professional" line. It is a power-packed camera that is good for any professional looking to have the best equipment money can buy. The sensor in it is very similar to that of Sony's Alpha DSLR-A900 and is actually smaller (Sony has 5.9 microns while Nikon's is 5.49 microns).

A problem that you might find is that the D3X isn't a speed demon, but can still burst through 5 frames per second at full resolution. This is due to the tremendous amount of data that the camera has to process. It's sensitivity can range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600 and has a Lo 1 of ISO 50 and a Hi 1 and 2 of ISO 3200 and ISO 6500. It's crop modes include one at 5:4 (8x10) at 20.4 megapixels and another at 10.5 megapixels.

The body, AF system, viewfinder, and Expeed image processor are all the same as the D3 model and should have similar performance according to Nikon themselves. An upside is that the D3X is compatible with all the D3's accessories.

The camera is relatively light for such a high tech device at 2.7 pounds. and is 6.3 in wide by 3.5 in. deep by 6.2 inches high. The body is made out of a spiffy magnesium alloy.

It's resolution is 24.5 megapixels with a CMOS optical sensor. Special effects include vivid, neutral, and monochrome. It has a field of view crop factor of 1.0. The min and max shutter speeds are 30 sec. and 1/8000 sec respectively. it's X-sync speed is 1/250 sec. Exposure modes include bulb, manual, automatic, shutter-priority, and aperture-priority. It supports JPEG, TIFF, NEF (RAW), RAW +JPEG.

As far as memory goes it takes a flash-compact flash card. The lens system mounting is a Nikon F. It has a self timer that delays at 2, 5, 10, and 20, seconds. It does not have a flash, but has red eye reduction. The display is a color LCD display-TFT active matrix measuring 3 inches and has a resolution of 920,000 pixels.

If you wish to buy this you will have to fork up a hefty $7,999.00 dollars.

If you love photography, this camera is for you. Many changes have been made with this model. It's an upgrade from the Canon 40d. DIGIC 4 processor means moving the extra data at a faster pace than its predecessor, and keeping the camera to a high 6.3 frames per second while maintaining that 14-bit data for RAW images.

The Canon 50d has 15.1 megapixels CMOS sensor, an ISO range from 100 to 3200, plus 2 higher settings (H1 equals ISO 6,400 and H2 takes the camera to 12,800). The LCD screen has been improved with a higher resolution, making it a 640x480 screen.

A new menu offers more custom functions and control of noise reduction and RAW and JPEG shooting. It ranks up there with it's major competitors. Screen size, resolution, and the ability to let in sunlight is important for the 50D. It has a live view screen, letting it be used for shot composition. It has better weather sealing than the 40d's camera body.

The Canon 50d has 6.3 continuous mode frames/second, a 1.6 focal length multiplier, auto and manual focus, Hot Shoe and PC Sync external flash connection, 1 x Proprietary BP-511A Lithium-ion rechargeable battery and a battery charger is included. The Canon 50d does not come packaged with a kit lens.

Photographers who loved the Nikon D3 or D300 are going to be equally pleased with the Nikon D700. It's Nikon's effort to present a compact digital professional model for digital photography. It's designed to outpace other brands of photographic equipment. It has a smaller body and weighs less than previous models. The D700 is approx 34mm (1.3 in) shorter, 13mm (0.5 in) narrower and 10mm (0.4 in) shallower. Weight (with no battery) comparisons: D3 - 1240g, D700 - 995g. Also, the Nikon 700 has a 0.72x viewfinder. With a 12.1 mp full frame, an ISO 200-6400 with boost up to 25600, down to ISO 100, this is truly state-of-the-art. It supports DX lenses of 5.1 megapixels and has an ultra fast start-up and shutter lag. The shutter is the same as the D3 model at a 150,000 cycle rating. Photographers will like the 100 frames maximum in continuous shooting mode. The sensor is 36 x 23.9 mm.

The Nikon D700 is loaded with image sensing cleaning. Like the D300, the Nikon D700 has a self-cleaning filter and "Dust Off" feature. The D700 also has a 14-bit A/D conversion, 12 channel readout. It's built with Nikon Expeed. The D700, due to its larger sensors, makes this model slightly more expensive than the D3 but about half the price of a D300. For serious digitial photographers, the D700 offers compact convenience and state-of-the-art features and is definitely the way to go.

The Canon Powershot G10 is a strikingly beautiful camera that feels like a much more expensive camera. It is a top-range high quality compact digital camera that can produce the most stunning pictures found by a camera in this line. Its an easy to use camera for all of the things it can do, including snapping precise pictures with its 28mm wide angle lens.

The G10 also comes loaded with a whopping 14.7 megapixels, and enhanced face detection technology. It also detects motion, and adjusts so that it can capture images clearly and perfectly each time. If you find that your contrast is off or the scene isn't ideal for a specific photo, the G10 has a built in enhanced contrast correction option that automatically fixes your images each time you snap a photo.

This camera is designed to take only the purest and truest pictures. Meaning, you will never see distorted coloring in your images unless you intend to do so. Each object in an image will be well defined and colorful, just as nature intended it to be. In addition, the G10 has an auto-focus and image stabilizer, so those with shaky hands can still get a great shot in. The optical zoom and digital zoom make it easier to get a clear photo of something far away, and the sophisticated image stablizer ensures that it doesn't blur like most cameras. The Lithium Ion battery can take 400 shots with the LCD screen turned on, and close to 1,000 with the LCD screen switched off.

Other specs for the Canon Powershot G10 include; RAW image capabilities, Red eye reduction, and high ISO options. This camera is durable and ideal for those that need a high quality camera that is also easy to use and navigate.

Lens quality and pixel resolution affect the resolution of a digital camera. Four-, five-, six-, and higher megapixel cameras with quality lenses can match the resolution of amateur 35mm photographs. Digital cameras with fewer pixels (such as a CCD of 2-3.2 megapixels) are fine for snapshots, but just don't have the resolution of film. If film-like resolution is required, definitely consider a camera with a chip of five or more megapixels.

Surprisingly more important than the CCD is the lens. In fact, the quality of the lens is so important that you should seriously consider only the finest lens manufacturers for your digital camera. Companies that produce the best lenses include the following:

Carl Zeiss-Considered the best optics on the planet.

Nikon-Exclusively on Nikon cameras.

Canon-Appear on Canon cameras.

Leica-Leica lenses are considered the sharpest among 35mm photographers.

Schneider-An American company that manufactures lenses for Kodak.

Look for ultra-low dispersion glass, fluorite (a mineral) glass, apochromatic lenses, and aspherical lenses. These technologies, which add significantly to the cost of a lens, can even be found on instamatic digital cameras, such as those from Kodak (Schneider) and Sony (Carl Zeiss).

You might encounter a number of different terms when shopping for a lens:

APO (apochromatic)-These lenses have special coatings that focus different wavelengths of light (red, green, and blue) more precisely. Nikon calls its APO technology ED, for Extra-Low Dispersion.

Fluorite-This type of glass creates lenses that have no distortion whatsoever.

Aspherical-These lenses are ground into nonspherical shapes that enable more compact lenses to be manufactured. Aspherical lenses also reduce coma, through a lens far from its center. The rays do not focus on a point inside the camera, but instead create a cone of light, which looks like a comet tail.

You can get the new Panasonic for a little more than six hundred dollars. The design of the camera makes it easy to hold and use; however the menu isn’t as user friendly.

With an optical zoom of only 2.5x you may find yourself wanting more from the lens. However, you are sure to be pleased with Panasonic’s improvements in the area of auto intelligent providing you with better exposure.

A list of the specifications include: ISO 80 – 3200, File Formats both JPEG and RAW, built in flash, 50MB built in memory, PictBridge and AV Output and HD AV Output (which requires an additional cable).

Overall, Panasonic’s latest model offers a lot of camera without going to the next level of owning a DSLR. You’re sure to get a quality image with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3.

It features Live View Function, DIGIC III Image Processor, and an Integrated Cleaning System. It also includes a new 12.2 megapixel CMOS Sensor. There's a lot of reason's why the EOS Rebel XSi should be your next camera. Its easy to use, has great battery life and provides amazing image quality.

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi can store your images on a SD or SDHC memory card. You can take pictures up to 4,272 x 2,848 pixels so you can see your images as large as life with great quality, all at the same time. If you need a lot of pictures in a short amount of time, you'll love how it shoots 53 shots continuous with 3.5 shots per second. When you're ready to review the pictures you've taken, the 3.0 LCD monitor will make viewing your images a lot easier, or you could always use the video adapter and plug them right into your television set so the whole family can enjoy.
All of these features and many more make the Canon EOS Rebel XSi well worth the $799 price tag it comes with.

By far the biggest problem with consumer-level digital cameras is the delay. Unlike most film cameras, some consumer digital cameras have a significant delay when you depress the shutter. When you take a picture with fixed-focus 35mm film cameras, the picture is taken immediately. This isn't always the case with digital cameras. It may take several seconds before the camera can capture the image because the camera must perform the following actions:

Autofocus on the subject.

Open the shutter when autofocus is finished to expose the sensor to light.

Accumulate enough charge on the sensor.

Close the shutter.

At this point the image is captured, but processing must occur before the image will appear on the built-in camera screen-which creates a significant (and insanely annoying) delay before you can take your next shot. For this reason, you really cannot use consumer-level digital cameras for any type of sports photography or photography involving uncontrollable or moving subjects. This, of course, includes children and pets. If you already own a camera with significant delays, determine how long it actually takes to take a photo. Chances are it takes less than two seconds, but even this small delay makes action photography impossible.

The camera should be an extension of you. It should feel as effortless as riding a bike. This is currently only possible with digital SLRs, which fortunately are as fast as film SLRs. But any delays will affect your photography. Your pictures will not be the same. Your goal should be to find a camera that has no delay, or at least a delay you don't notice. With no delay, you will be able to use the camera much more often.
